Ashley

Ashley was having a dream. In the dream, she was running down the hallway of the Plaza de Leonetti, opening every door.

"Tim?"

Each room was eerily empty. Her heart raced. She knew she was in a dream. The place wasn't real, but the shame, guilt, and fear definitely were. She had driven Tim away, but she couldn't remember what that was.

She woke up fighting through the silk sheets and heavy comforter on Gideon's bed. It was raining outside, drops of water pattering against the windows in a steady, comforting rhythm. But the sense of comfort did not touch the hollow places in Ashley's heart.

She slipped out of bed, pulling the comforter with her. Gideon wasn't in the room, but that didn't surprise her. Since she'd basically moved in, she had found out more about the mysterious billionaire.

He slept only a few hours each night and was up at dawn to work out in the gym that had been set up in one of the many outbuildings on his compound. Then, he would come back to the room and get right to work, expecting Ashley to be showered, dressed, and ready for the drive to the office.

She was still his assistant, she still had a job to do. She went to Gideon's house, had a nice dinner, then fucked until the wee hours of the morning. Then, they would do it all again.

But, in the month since her anniversary, she had come no closer to understanding Gideon. He enjoyed having her there, waiting for him, and willing to give herself to him whenever he wanted. But, other than the powerful physical attraction, there was no warmth of love. It was if she was a possession, a princess in a tower given everything she wanted, but not the one thing she needed.

Love.

There was a discrete knock at the door. Ashley kept looking out the window at the long, green lawn stretching away in front of Gideon's palatial estate.

"Yes, Patrick?"

The door opened and a tall, thin red-haired man dressed in a servant's outfit stepped in.

"I'm sorry, Ms. Ward," Patrick said. "Mr. Gideon will be ready in just a few minutes and wanted me to check and see if you needed anything."

Ashley turned and looked at the lanky red-head. Patrick was kind, but he was Gideon's man and Ashley had the feeling he kept tabs on her. He certainly seemed to know his master's schedule and was sure that Ashley had everything she needed to keep the big man happy. At first, his solicitude had been flattering, but constantly being watched grated on her nerves.

"No, I'm fine," Ashley said. "Tell Gideon I'm not feeling well."

"Oh, I'm sure Mr. Cole will be distressed to hear it. Is there anything I can get you?"

"Just silence, Patrick." She turned back to the window. "Just silence."

Patrick didn't reply. Instead, he nodded curtly, stepped out into the hall, and closed the door behind him.
